A Birthday Ball..

The other day we celebrated the birthday of U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines, Harry K. Thomas, Jr., at a restaurant in Global City, Taguig.

He is in his last few weeks of his 3 year tour of duty and we wanted to wish him a happy birthday before his send off – he is finding time between his regular duties to attend several farewell dinners hosted by the many new friends he has made during his tenure. I suppose as we were both raised in the same neighborhood back in New York, it was a little easier for him to say yes to our request…

So on a Sunday afternoon the four of us had lunch and then we joined other friends of his to watch a basketball game between two rival colleges – Ateneo de Manila University and De LaSalle University. The teams featured a mixture of PBA player alumni and university seniors.

It was a friendly game played for charity. The outcome was decided in the final seconds, and the Ambassador, remaining true to foreign service diplomacy – showed neutrality by rooting for a good game and nothing more…

Happy Birthday Harry Thomas…

Until next time.
