province life: batteries not included

It was that time again…

Workers who tended to the land for the past season of rice growing gather together to complete their annual task. That is, to gather their bounty of rice stalks and place them in the thresher to separate the head of the stalks from the straw.

Before these machines were made, threshing was done by hand, a very laborious and time consuming chore. These days, even with the machine, it’s still a chore..

A very valuable and treasured piece of equipment, the motor is carried separately daily  to the fields, and returned to secured quarters when the day is done.

without this engine, it’s back to the “good old days”…

the barrio: and carry on

My wanderings through the ward usually make for many encounters with kids. Their curious looks and smiling faces are infectious…

After the sun has been up in the sky for a while, I often encounter a shy one who’s face I can’t capture, but…

..and then there’s the not-so-shy ones usually getting baked.

Finally, there’s always one guy I encounter who obviously runs the place because he certainly carries himself as such.
