Images of life: the tracks of my tears…

At the Edge

One block behind the main street that passes though the city of Binan, Philippines, are old railroad tracks where gypsies and displaced persons reside (and even do business). There is a train that runs regularly down the track, though the train must move rather slowly lest it derail and ruin a bunch of make shift homes (and several lives along with it).

A small group of us took a 3 km trek along the tracks, handing out bags of food to random families we encountered in the spirit of Christmas.

These are just some of the images of life along the tracks in Binan..

Road Trip to Pampanga: Bale Dutung

One day in April, we joined Harry Thomas (the former U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines) on a road trip to Pampanga, where I’m told the best Filipino cooks come from, and entered the home of Claude Tayag and his wife, Mary Ann. We were treated to sumptuous festival of flavorful food. But before the food fest began, we were welcomed with a bit of background on the origins of the “wooden house” before it became the spot known to be attended by several world famous chefs…

….and so we ate our fill..

Mary Ann serves the main dish: Kare-kareng Laman Dagat!

In Baguio; the air up here…

.just so our friends back in the U.S. who think we’re always in heat, forty six degrees (overnight) is pretty cool – even for here in the Philippines…
